When visiting Paris, you asked for great French traditional and creative gastronomy and wine in a typical 1900s Parisian setting at reasonable prices? We found the place.

Nested close to place de la République and to le Haut-Marais district, next to the beautiful oval Cirque d’Hiver – “Winter Circus”, (hence Clown bar which used to be the Circus snack bar), the Clown Bar is a well kept secret address the locals love in this vibrant neighborhood in East Paris since its renovation and reopening in 2014.

Tiny bistrot from the early 1920s, nothing fancy from the outside (lovely terrace though / sunbathed at lunchtime) but one of the best bistrot kitchens in Paris and a lovely zinc bar. For the quality of the food here, prices are very affordable (from 6 to 20€, tapas or larger plates) -to be clear, you’ll find way more expensive prices for lower (or equivalent) quality plates in a lot of so-called chic restaurants. So don’t be fooled anymore.

Each plate here is a creative masterpiece of traditional French gastronomy prepared by one Paris best chefs (he worked before at Vivant Table). It’s rare to have that many unusual choices so go for the brains platter, the fritter whelks, octopus salad, herrings and potatoes, traditional pork tenderlin. It is served as tapas -easy to share and taste various flavors. And what to say about the wine! The pairings with the food are amazing! (Natural wines for most of the list).

Around? Cocktails at PasdeLoup (50 meters away in the same street) or at local L’entrée des Artistes (around the corner) -ask for their home made Gin and Basil cocktail, it’s divine.

When? Wednesday to Sunday / Service From 12pm to 2:30pm and from 7pm to 22:30pm. Open from 8am to 2am.
