One of the most beautiful parks in Paris, along with the Buttes Chaumont, the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Parc Monsouris. Located on the Left Bank, by the River Seine, in South East Paris, very close to Gare d’Austerlitz train station, The Jardin des Plantes is a romantic or family park for a stroll, an artsy gateway and a delight for the kids.

The Park: Open to the public since the 16th century (400 hundred years!), this botanical garden descended from the royal medicinal includes alpine and ecological gardens, palmy hothouses, an 18th-century belvedere, playgrounds and cafés. It has long alleys for endless walks. And a secret alpine garden.

The Museum or Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle: This Great Galerie  of Evolution magically displays more than 7.000 stuffed animals according to their habitat across the ages, rising up from marine species through the savannah, jungle and polar regions. A must-see! Interactive panels and a children’s gallery devoted to biodiversity and ecology are great for kids.

The Zoological or Ménagerie: Also great for kids, the Ménagerie zoo (which plays an important role in conserving endangered species) is why you take your kids to this park when you visit Paris. More than 1.800 animals in the heart of Paris: Kangaroos, red pandas, giant turtles, etc. All the species here.

Something else to know? It’s a paradise for joggers. A complete tour of the park (with a hill at some point) will take you around 15 to 20 minutes at a jogging pace.

What to see close by? The Great Mosque of Paris.

Where? Check out this official map of the park on how on to get in and find your way in and out the garden
