Paris is cutting the engine for a few hours! Sunday, September 25th 2016 – all traffic from individual motor vehicles (cars, motorbikes) will be stopped in certain zones of Paris. With the exception of emergency services, taxis, and those with exemptions, the streets will be empty. An added bonus, public transport will be free for this occasion!
How do we understand this initiative?
Paris wants to send a strong signal. But this act also responds to local issues, notably in the effort to lower pollution levels that have been hitting record levels recently.
To mark the day, numerous events are scheduled for the Sunday, like at Place de la République where 300 local organizations will comprise an Alternative village, along with international artists and big actors in the field of sustainable development.
This initiative is similar to the closing of the banks of the River Seine and certain neighborhoods each weekend (Montmartre, Marais).
Also, car-free Paris can be a beautiful day to spend with family on bikes!
Please note if you have or plan on renting a car on this date!
