When summer comes around, it’s a whole new world that rises along the Canal de l’Ourcq (the Ourcq channel), in North Eastern Paris.

Every summer, until August 24, 2014, an eclectic festival organised by the banks of the Canal de l’Ourcq, the Ourcq Canal Festival offers many different activities and events on or at the water’s edge.

If you’re longing to experience a Paris away from the crowds this is the can’t-miss event of the week.

Away from the crowds and the heat of center Paris, discover the off the beaten track charms of North Eastern Paris, from the Bassin de la Villette (at Paris-Plages, find more about it here) to Seine-Saint-Denis, which has grown from an unknown district to a very welcoming one. This neighbourhood has become a major attraction on weekend evenings, drawing in an artsy crowd. Dancing, exhibitions, live music, picnic, discovery trails… Most tourists and let’s be honest, so do Parisians, have no idea these places and attractions even exist.

With your family, your friends or your lover, hop on the river shuttles (1 euro per trip on Saturday, 2 euros on Sunday, free of charge for your children under 10) to get to the different places of the canal or on the boat movie cruises, have a ball with the water activities and the cycling trips (6 euros for the day), have fun at the Bals barges, where you’ll dance outdoors on French songs, or enjoy street artists performances (discover on your own or with a guide, every Sunday – 10 euros).

We also like: The festive cruises for your summer evenings are the perfect combination of leisure and food tasting (25-35 euros).

Also on the Canal de l’Ourcq discover an unusual building, the Pavillon des Canaux, home of some very talented street artists

Find more about the festival and book your cruises there.

Where?
From Bassin de la Villette (metro Station: Jaurès, line 5 or 7) to Bobigny (metro station: Bobigny-Pablo Picasso, line 7)
