The Tourist in Paris paid its own bill and wrote this article for free.

SoMa, a trendsetting izakaya (bistrot in Japanese) serving tapas hasn’t been open for long in the South Marais district (Fall 2014), in center Paris and is already a must-go-to address for all real Japanese-fusion food lovers (with a budget).

But what you won’t know by reading other travel and tourism websites, is that this venue has a brand new young chef who took over the kitchen in May 2015 (it might have changed by now) and it’s a Japanese dream comes true for your mouth. The chef is actually the best friend of the owner and after having worked in various luxury hotels and restaurants all over the world, like Hong-Kong or Indonesia, is now taking his talents to this intimate bistrot.

Most of you (as we did) are going to be willing to choose among various tempting dishes on the menu. With a price range between 10 and 20 euros, you’d probably go for three to four tapas plates (small but tasty portions) to share (like lobster maki, butterfish sashimi, soft shell crab futomaki, green tea octopus salad).

What you don’t know yet is that this chef might ask you if you’d be tempted by a blind menu of 7+ dishes (60€ total per person). Say yes! And get ready to be blown away.

The must: The marinated Beef Carpaccio

Without revealing the entire menu, it would be a shame for him and for you, let me just tell you about his favorite dish of all: the smoked Angus beef carpaccio (14€). It is a killer. Never had a better carpaccio in my life.

Our tip: Best to eat at the bar, located in the middle of the restaurant, and where the chef works, right in front of you (also has two cooks downstairs). And he is very nice and funny.

You should book your seats in advance when traveling to Paris! Mandatory reservations at: + 33 9 81 82 53 51

There’s a 20€ lunch menu
