Summer rhymes with outdoor picnics and drinks with friends. In Paris, places to enjoy an afternoon like this during the sunny days are all over town.

One of our favorite spots are the Canal banks in East Paris: a haven for bobos who seat by the water and catch the summer rays during endless afternoons, evenings and then nights all week long. Also home of great spots for bars, terraces and parties. Haven? Not for everyone, and especially not for the Canal (and the ducks!).

Trash and bottles floating in the water

Unfortunately, some people have a tendency not to respect their environment and have no problem leaving their trash in the streets, where they hanged out for hours and worst, throwing their empty wine or beer bottles in the Canal. Even worse, after a few beers, when the need for a stop at the restrooms shows up, it usually ends up on some building front door. Needless to say the locals don’t really appreciate it.

A Tumblr called “Welcome to the Canal Saint Martin just published pictures of what the Canal looks like these past few days and it’s not pretty. Such a shame when you know that we duly recommend this place for a perfect chill afternoon discovery stroll.

If we want to keep a clean and beautiful Canal and happy residents (the locals and the ducks!) who won’t have to call for the police or worst, a permanent closure of the banks, please try to respect this part of town, or any other.

Thank you!
