Is Matcha about to replace coffee? This is the one question trendsetting foodies, fashionistas and bloggers are asking in 2016, as Umami, the Japanese grocery brand opens the first Matcha Café & Bar in Paris, close to Place de la République in East Paris.

What is Matcha? This finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea has been served for centuries in Asia. It is known to have healthy relaxing and energizer powers; it looks and tastes somewhere between tea and coffee.

The stone-ground Japanese-style green tea is now a trendsetting drink, and its modern version is served here at Umami as green-tea (organic) lattes, frappés or iced-drinks (even beer), or other Matcha-based snacks. Umami picks its Matcha very wisely in the Japanese region of Kyoto.

Unami serves Matcha frappé and pastries (cheesecake, cookies), and its grocery area is specialised in Matcha and other trendy Japanese healthy goods. A paradise for Asian detox food seakers: seaweed, Yuzu-based drink, gluten-free food and other rare and tasty products.

You can eat there, in the Scandinavian-inspired setting, or buy to go. Don’t like Matcha? Umami also serves regular Asian coffee, tea and food, like artisanal Japanese noodles (soba, udon, somen), red Miso, Yuzu soja (also to buy to go).

Perfect for breakfast, lunch or snack time.
