The quiet charm of the Marais quarter always attracts many tourists and visitors coming to Paris. This very old neighborhood, preserved by Haussmann during his reconstruction of Paris, preserves relics of the city’s past with small streets and historic and grand buildings dating from the 17th century.

Throughout the years, the Marais has been reinventing itself with art galleries, shops, and cafes. However, the charm of the Marais is not in these new stores, but rather in the many gardens and squares it has to offer. Many of these gardens are former courtyards of grand hôtels particuliers, and are well hidden and maintained but open to the public. Here are our top five secret gardens of the Marais to stop by when you are in the area.

Le jardin des Rosiers

Probably the best hidden garden in Paris, it is situated between Rue des Francs-Bourgeois and Rue des Rosiers. It’s peaceful and quiet as not many people know about it, and you can access it through the European Museum, the former hôtel de Coulanges, or also by Rue des Rosiers. You will find flowery decor and even a small toys for kids. Le jardin des rosiers is an ideal spot to rest in the middle of a busy city or even just pass by while walking in the neighborhood between the two streets.

When? From 2PM to 7PM in the winter, and from 2PM to 8:30PM in the summer. Where? 35, rue des Franc-Bourgeois 75004.

Le jardin de l’hôtel de Soubise

Closed until recently, it’s a very secret and beautiful spot for a stroll with your kids and family.

Where? 60 rue des Francs-Bourgeois, 75003 Paris.

Jardin de l’hôtel de Sully

Accessible through a discreet door from Place des Vosges or by the entrance of the hotel de Sully itself on Rue Saint Antoine, this garden is the former courtyard of the Duke of Sully when he lived there in the 1600s. This private garden is always surprising in contrast to its surroundings – even in the heart of Paris and a few meters away from a busy street, all you can hear is the calming chirping of birds. Come to relax and find a hidden space with a book during your summer days, great during high tourist season.
